This article gives a very good summary of the challenges using SPAN (Switch Port for ANalysis) vs a dedicated passive network tap (such as this inexpensive Garland tap). Larger organizations may want to consider more robust tap aggregation devices which allow for almost unlimited topology and traffic engineering capabilities. Gigamon is an example of a popular tap aggregation vendor. While expensive, these devices can help even the largest organizations develop effective network monitoring and compliance processes.
